Boxborough, MA, December 1, 2015 — Senscio Systems, Inc., a healthcare tech company that has developed an artificial intelligence-based, services-and-support solution for managing complex-care conditions, hosted a roundtable discussion on November 17, 2015 at the Sheraton Hotel in Portsmouth, NH. The participants, a range of government officials, doctors, nonprofit CEOs, and ACO leaders, identified the most challenging roadblocks to providing effective care for the 20% of the population with the most complex health issues and discussed strategies to move toward a more cost-effective and patient-centric solution.
“Everyone is responsible for the care [of this population],” said Jess Maurer, the Executive Director of the Maine Association of Area Agencies on Aging. “We need to create livable communities for all.”
“This is the right conversation to be having, we are on the right path and are at a critical juncture in the service sector and meeting people’s needs,” agreed Darryl Millner, Assistant Director at the Division of Developmental Disabilities in South Dakota. “I can now go back to my communities and recharge the conversation.”
“I am encouraged to hear that there are solutions to the vexing problems,” said Commissioner Nick Toumpas, New Hampshire Commissioner of the Department of Health and Human Services. “We need to focus on health care, as opposed to sick care…I heard a number of ideas [during the discussion] that we can work on.”
The conversation centered on the key issues facing care for people with complex, chronic health conditions and the many exacerbating factors, such as homelessness, dementia, and socioeconomic status, that make identifying a patient’s most aggravating condition so difficult. The participants discussed their own experiences treating this population and recognized the commonalities among their diverse fields. In considering solutions, all agreed that there is a need for more collaboration between the medical field and community-support efforts and that there is no simple formula for treating these patients.
